About the Event

It’s been a while since we've gathered, but the spirit of cooking and connection remains strong. In honor of my beloved Yiayia, whose presence illuminated every moment in the kitchen, I invite you to join me for a special cooking class filled with love and legacy.

About Yiayia: My Yiayia was not just a grandmother; she was my guiding light, my confidante, and my culinary inspiration. Her journey from a rural Greek village to the bustling streets of Brooklyn was one of resilience, hard work, and unwavering love. Cooking was her language of love, and through it, she shared her heart with me and with all she knew.

The Menu: In this class, we’ll be crafting two dishes inspired by Yiayia:

  1. Wild Dandelion Soup: Inspired by her favorite dish and the abundance of dandelion greens she always kept on hand. Dandelion greens, a staple of Greek cuisine and symbolic of spring's arrival, infuse this soup with seasonal freshnessand flavores of the Greek countryside.
  2. Revani (Citrus Semolina Cake): Indulge in Yiayia's cherished Ravani, a traditional Greek dessert that was not only a family favorite but a beloved treat of my grandfather's. This delicate semolina cake, soaked in citrus-infused syrup, represents another expression of their love language through food.

Cook with Purpose: This class isn’t just about recipes; it’s about honoring Yiayia’s legacy and giving back to causes close to her heart. Your generous donations will support two meaningful organizations:

  • Chilis on Wheels New York: My Yiayia grew up during WWII, where she lost so many family members and her community due to famine. This organization provides hot vegan meals to those experiencing food insecurity, in addition to food pantries and much much more. Food has represented so many things to my Yiayia throughout her life, but ultimately it has been a way for people to feel cared for. Chilis on Wheels does just that.
  • St. Basil’s Academy: At just 10 years old, my Yiayia suddenly became an orphan - losing both of her parents within 40 days of each other. St. Basil's Academy offers support and care to vulnerable children, which echoes Yiayia’s compassionate spirit. My family has an incredible experience with St. Basil's. As a child I remember my mother taking in a 16 year girl for the holidays, offering a loving place for her so she wouldn't have to be alone. No child should ever feel alone, and Yiayia knew that more than most.

How to Participate: Whether you join the class or simply contribute, your presence and support mean the world. You’ll have the freedom to choose where your contribution goes.

Let’s come together, not only to cook but to celebrate the love and light that Yiayia brought into our lives. In her honor, let’s continue spreading warmth and kindness, one meal at a time.

Thank you for being part of this journey, and I can’t wait to share the kitchen with you.
